1. Piazza Vittorio Veneto Start from the modern heart of Matera. View of the Sasso Barisano, Fontana Ferdinandea, possibility to visit the Palombari (underground cistern). 2. Sasso Barisano Go down the alleys of via Fiorentini. Visit a cave-house (e.g. Casa Grotta del Casalnuovo) and the Church of San Pietro Barisano. 3. Civita and Cathedral Climb to the highest point of the old city. Visit the Cathedral of Matera and admire the view of the two Sassi. 4. Sasso Caveoso Explore the most authentic part. Must see: Rock Church of Santa Maria de Idris and via Bruno Buozzi. 5. Belvedere of Piazza Pascoli Final view of the Gravina and the Sasso Caveoso. Stop at a panoramic café recommended.

1. Rione Monti Start the tour from Piazza del Popolo and head towards Belvedere Santa Lucia, which has the best panoramic view of the trulli. Then walk down to Rione Monti, among the narrow streets full of trulli with roofs decorated with religious or esoteric symbols. Stop in one of the trulli that can be visited for free (some are shops or small exhibitions) to see the interior. 2. Church of Sant’Antonio At the top of Rione Monti is this trullo-shaped church, unique in the world. 3. Trullo Sovrano It is located near Piazza Sacramento, a few minutes walk away. It is the only two-story trullo, transformed into a museum. It shows how a noble family lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Entrance fee. 4. Free time A break in a typical bar or café to enjoy an ice cream, a pasticciotto or a glass of local wine. Purchase souvenirs or typical products (oil, taralli, ceramics).
