Once known as “Hell Valley” for its toxic fumaroles and boiling pools, it was renamed Owakudani after Emperor Meiji’s visit in 1876. Here, you can try the local specialty: Kuro-tamago (Black Eggs), boiled in sulfuric hot springs. Legend says eating one egg adds seven years to your life. The eggs turn black due to a chemical reaction between the hot spring’s sulfur and iron.
