About This Tour in Rostock

Experience East Germany in Rostock: Rostock has a lot of GDR era art and architecture in easy walking distance to experience, as well as a haunting Stasi memorial. I was born in 1970, grew up in Rostock and I love to show this side of our town to our international guests. Itinerary

Tour Itinerary

The tour starts with a ride on the... 2 hours

The tour starts with a ride on the East German era suburb train and tram into the town centre of Rostock. There we will exit at Kroepeliner Tor, which is at the Western End of Lange Strasse. There, we will get a great view. We will then exit Lange Strasse and see some more recent East German housing blocks. We will see the artwork "Kaspar Ohm" by Jo Jastram from the 1980s and walk past more housing and public art from the 1980s, in order to then return to Lange Strasse. There we will see the Stalinist buildings in detail, as well as the fountain "people by the water" by Jo Jastram from 1968. We will walk across Lange Strasse and see the fountain "Joy of Life" and the three famous wall reliefs on the town's history. We will then break for coffee, before heading to the Stasi Memorial in the old Stasi prison.

This is not a museum, but a memorial 30 minutes

This is not a museum, but a memorial. The atmosphere here is haunting and there is a lot of information to take in. On the standard tour, we will only stay for half an hour before lunch. We can discuss your wishes and requirements before the tour. https://www.lpb-mv.de/projekte/dug-rostock/

We will have lunch at a food court... 2 hours

We will have lunch at a food court in the town centre that provides traditional East German cuisine but also caters to all other tastes. After lunch, we will head to the tram stop Lange Strasse and have a gentle ride past lots of interesting historical sights. We will see the Soviet war memorial on the wall of Neptunwerft, a piece of public art from the turbulent reunification years, the wonderful Kunsthalle (the only purpose built art gallery of East Germany), and Reutershagen, which was built in the 1950s. We will then ride past Soviet style housing blocks in Evershagen, see the wonderful socialst murals there, and continue on to Luetten Klein, where we will exit the tram and look more closely at socialist housing blocks that could be in Novosibirsk, as well as an Ulrich Muether building with a large saddle roof. Depending on the interests of the participants, we can stop at other sights and have a closer look. We will then continue on to Warnemuende by suburb train.

In Warnemuende, there really is only one sight... 30 minutes

In Warnemuende, there really is only one sight for East German architecture enthusiasts: The Teepott by star engineer Ulrich Muether with its iconic saddle roof. If we have not gotten stuck somewhere else before, we can have coffee here.
